Today Is April 10, 2026 — Which Means It's Week 15 of the Year (And Week 1 Starts Monday)

For project planning, fiscal year tracking, or simply organizing your calendar, knowing the week number matters. But "week 1" isn't always January 1–7. The ISO 8601 standard (used internationally) defines weeks by specific rules: Week 1 is the week containing the first Thursday of January, and weeks always start on Monday. A week number calculator shows you which week any date falls into, plus the start and end dates of that week.

What This Calculator Does

A week number calculator takes a date and instantly shows its ISO week number (1–53). It displays the date range for that week (typically Monday to Sunday), and often shows you which week of various time periods that is (week of the year, week of the quarter, etc.). Some calculators let you find dates by week number: "show me all dates in week 20 of 2026."

How to Use This Calculator

Enter any date using the date picker or by typing it. The calculator instantly displays its ISO week number and the start/end dates for that week. Most calculators also show the full week number (like "Week 15 of 52" to indicate 52 weeks total in that year). You can navigate between weeks using arrow buttons or enter different dates to see their week numbers. Some versions let you reverse-lookup: enter a week number and year, and it shows you the dates that week covers.

The Formula Behind the Math

Week numbering follows the ISO 8601 standard, which has specific rules.

What is ISO Week Numbering?

Week 1 is defined as the week containing the first Thursday of January. (Equivalently, it's the first week with 4+ days in January.)
Weeks always start on Monday and end on Sunday.
There are 52 or 53 weeks per year, depending on the year.
Week numbers range from 01 to 53 (or 52 if that year has only 52 weeks).

Step 1: Find January 4th of the target year. January 4th is always in Week 1 (because the first Thursday is always within the first 4 days of January). Example: January 4, 2026.

Step 2: Find the Monday of the week containing January 4th. Count backward from January 4th to the previous Monday. This is the start of Week 1.

Step 3: Calculate the number of days between that Monday and the target date.

Step 4: Divide by 7 and add 1. Week_number = floor(days_from_week_1_start / 7) + 1. This tells you which week the date falls into.

Example: April 10, 2026

January 4, 2026 is a Sunday.
The Monday of that week is January 5, 2026 (Week 1 starts here).
April 10, 2026 is 96 days later (January has 31 days, Feb has 28, Mar has 31, plus 10 days in April = 31+28+31+10 = 100 days from Jan 1 to Apr 10. From Jan 5 to Apr 10 = 100 - 4 = 96 days).
96 ÷ 7 = 13 remainder 5. So it's in week 13 + 1 = week 14.

Wait, let me recalculate to verify: April 10, 2026. Week 1 starts January 5, 2026 (Monday).

Jan 5 to Jan 12 = Week 1
Jan 12 to Jan 19 = Week 2
...
April 10 - January 5 = 95 days
95 ÷ 7 = 13.57
So April 10 is in week 13 + 1 = week 14.

Actually, let me count more carefully using days of January:

Jan 5-11 = Week 1 (7 days)
Jan 12-18 = Week 2 (7 days)
Jan 19-25 = Week 3
Jan 26-Feb 1 = Week 4
Feb 2-8 = Week 5
Feb 9-15 = Week 6
Feb 16-22 = Week 7
Feb 23-Mar 1 = Week 8
Mar 2-8 = Week 9
Mar 9-15 = Week 10
Mar 16-22 = Week 11
Mar 23-29 = Week 12
Mar 30-Apr 5 = Week 13
Apr 6-12 = Week 14

So April 10, 2026 is in Week 14. The start is Monday April 6, end is Sunday April 12.

Step 5: Handle year boundaries. If the calculated week number is 0 (the date is in the last days of the previous year), it actually belongs to the last week of the previous year. If it's 54+, it belongs to week 1 of the next year.

Step 6: Display week start and end dates. Once you know the week number, calculate the Monday and Sunday of that week.

The calculator automates all of this, instantly showing you the week number and date range for any date.

Project Management and Gantt Charts: Organizing Work by Week

Many project managers track work in weekly blocks. A week number calculator lets you quickly identify which weeks tasks span, making it easy to create Gantt charts and timeline visualizations.

Fiscal Year and Quarterly Planning: Organizing by Weeks

Some organizations track quarters and years by week number rather than by calendar month. Week 1–13 is Q1, weeks 14–26 is Q2, etc. A week number calculator makes this clear.

Media and Broadcasting: Scheduling by Week Number

TV shows, podcasts, and content calendars often work in weekly units. A week number calculator helps content creators confirm which week a broadcast or release date falls into.

Tips and Things to Watch Out For

ISO week numbering isn't the same as "week of the year" in some systems. The US sometimes uses "week 1 = January 1–7," while ISO 8601 uses "week 1 = the week containing the first Thursday." If you're working with legacy systems, verify which standard they use.

The first few days of January might be week 52 or 53 of the previous year. January 1-3, 2026 are not in "week 1 of 2026", they're in the final weeks of 2025. The calculator handles this, but it's counterintuitive.

The last few days of December might be week 1 of the next year. December 29-31, 2026 are actually in Week 1 of 2027 (if they fall after Friday of week 52). This is standard but confusing when planning across year boundaries.

Weeks always start Monday in ISO 8601. Some organizations or regions use Sunday as the start (like the US culturally). If your calendar uses Sunday as the start, the week number might be off by one. Verify which convention you're using.

53-week years aren't rare. Contrary to common assumption, some years have 53 weeks. 2026 has 52 weeks, but 2020 had 53. Check your target year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What week number is today?

Enter today's date into the week number calculator above. It instantly shows the ISO week number and the week's start and end dates.

What week number is April 10, 2026?

Using the formula above, April 10, 2026 is in Week 14 of 2026 (Monday April 6 to Sunday April 12).

How do I find the dates for week 20 of 2026?

Some week number calculators let you enter a week number and year, then display the start and end dates for that week. Alternatively, count from Week 1 (January 5–11, 2026) forward.

Why is January 1 sometimes not in Week 1?

Because ISO 8601 defines Week 1 as the week containing the first Thursday of January. If January 1 is a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, it's in the previous year's final weeks. The calculator clarifies this.

How many weeks are in a year?

Most years have 52 weeks, but some have 53. You can count by looking up Week 1 and Week 52/53 for your year.

What's the difference between ISO week number and US week number?

ISO weeks start Monday and define Week 1 differently. US weeks often start Sunday and use "week 1 = January 1–7." If you're working internationally, use ISO. For US-specific contexts, check which standard applies.

How do I use week numbers for project planning?

Assign tasks to specific weeks by their week numbers. "Complete design in weeks 10–12" is clearer than "complete by March." The calculator confirms which weeks are which.

Can I track fiscal years by week number?

Yes, but you'll need to establish your fiscal week 1 (which might differ from calendar week 1). Many organizations align fiscal years to the calendar, but some offset. Once you know your fiscal Week 1 date, use the calculator to identify fiscal weeks.
